Common RV Insurance Questions
What is RV Insurance?
Your recreational vehicle or motorhome is a combination of both a motorcar and a residence. Therefore, it’s not possible to adequately insure it using standard auto insurance.
Rather, RV insurance is specifically designed to address the cost risks and liabilities associated with this multi-faceted vehicle. It is essentially a motor vehicle policy that accounts for the fact that your RV is a costly, often high-risk vehicle that you want to be able to protect in case unexpected, unavoidable accidents occur.
What Does RV Insurance Cover?
Depending on the type of RV you own—travel trailer, tow trailer, motor home etc.—your RV policy will need to include several different benefits.
Motor homes will need the most comprehensive coverage, including benefits that look a lot like those within standard auto insurance. These include:
Other benefits that are specifically designed for all RV owners’ liabilities are also available, including:
Vacation liability coverage:Pays you when you are parked at a campsite and someone gets hurt in or around your RV.
Trip interruption coverage:Covers costs if you have a wreck that forces you to stop your travel. This coverage can pay for added living expenses incurred as a result.
Possessions coverage: Pays for your personal belongings within the RV when they sustain damage as a result of a wreck or other hazard.
Is RV Insurance Required in Minnesota?
By law, all vehicles (including RVs) registered or principally garaged in Minnesota are required to carry minimum amounts of auto insurance. These are:
$30,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person
$60,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident
$10,000 property damage liability coverage per accident
$25,000 uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage per person
Under Minnesota’s no-fault laws, PIP insurance will be the insured driver’s first source of compensation for accident injuries, regardless of who was at fault for the accident. Only if a claim exceeds their PIP limits can they claim other costs under the at-fault party’s liability insurance or under their own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
Please Note: If you finance your RV, then you might be required by your lender to purchase collision, comprehensive and/or gap insurance.
